Austria, the Heart of Europe
Austria is a German-speaking country located in Central Europe and is one of the member states of the European Union (EU). It boasts a stable economic structure and a high quality of life, and is considered one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Austria is also a member of the Schengen Agreement, which allows free border crossings with other Schengen countries. Until now, citizens of non-EU countries have been able to stay for up to 90 days without a visa, but a new system is set to be implemented starting in 2026.
How will traveling to Austria change with the introduction of ETIAS?
Until now, citizens of certain non-EU countries such as Japan, South Korea, and the United States have been able to freely visit Austria. However, starting in 2026, all non-EU citizens wishing to enter the Schengen area, including Austria, must obtain ETIAS approval.
ETIAS allows short-term stays of up to 90 days across Europe (Schengen area).
Even with the introduction of ETIAS, free movement between Schengen countries will be maintained.
Security will be enhanced through information collection and pre-screening, while entry procedures will remain streamlined.
Who needs the European ETIAS visa?
Travelers from non-EU countries who wish to enter the Schengen area, including Austria, are required to apply for ETIAS. Currently, more than 50 countries are subject to this requirement, and this may change in the future.
ETIAS applies to the following visit purposes:
• Tourism and leisure
• Business trips
• Medical purposes
• Air transit or layovers within Europe
